Colombia: Día de las Velitas (Day of the Little Candles)
In Colombia, December 7th marks the Día de las Velitas, or Day of the Little Candles, which officially kicks off the holiday season. Streets and homes are illuminated with candles and lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere of hope and togetherness.
Our social media manager, who lived in Colombia for nearly three years, remembers this tradition vividly. She was invited by her Afro-Colombia coworkers to meet their families, share meals and celebrate in communion. It’s a beautiful reminder of how light and connection can bring warmth to our lives.
Sierra Leone: New Year’s on the Beach
In Sierra Leone, New Year’s Day is a national holiday celebrated outdoors—often on the beach! While we’re layering up in the snow, Sierra Leoneans ring in the New Year with open-air concerts, fireworks, and masquerade dances.
On January 1st, locals gather with family and friends for barbecues, games, and beach volleyball along the stunning Freetown Peninsula. It’s a vibrant and joyful celebration that emphasizes community and togetherness.
This celebration is close to our hearts at ABC Realty Twin Cities, as our founder and CEO’s husband is Sierra Leonean. The country’s deep traditions of unity and togetherness resonate strongly with our own values of home, family, and community.
